Cottonwoodz Genn Greymane “Genn”

Genn was born on April 8, 2020, and was bred by Dora Simpson, who is Cottonwoodz Kennel in Texas, USA. Genn was born into a litter of seven puppies. Genn came home with us when he was about 3.5 weeks old, so that we could begin bonding with him during his critical socialization period, which occurs between 4-8 weeks for high content wolfdogs, instead of starting at 6 weeks and lasting until somewhere between 12 -16 weeks like most other types of domestic dog breeds. Genn’s parents are Cottonwoodz Rocky Man (“Rocky”), and Cottonwoodz Ditto Bug (“Ditto”). Just like his parents, Rocky and Ditto, Genn is also a high content wolfdog.

Genn is a very goofy, playful, and easygoing boy. He is very affectionate and loves to hang out with me as much as possible. Even when he plays with his other wolfdog friends, he will check in with me frequently for attention and cuddles. He is VERY smart and a super quick learner. He picks up on new tricks and behaviors after only a couple of attempts, and really loves to learn new things. He is very motivated by praise and treats, which makes training easy. Genn’s favorite pastime is playing fetch - he taught himself as a tiny puppy! He has lived indoors quite well, and has a great off switch, although we transitioned him to living outside full-time, so that he could be a buddy for our low content male, Dorian, whom Genn adores. Genn still comes inside our home occasionally to hang out with us. He is fully crate trained, but can also just hang out on the couch with a toy. He is not overly destructive, is very easy to redirect, and was very easy to potty train.

Genn has a moderate prey drive. He will stalk and chase small animals or livestock if he sees them, but is still easy to manage and redirect on-leash. We do not allow him to be off-leash around other animals aside from dogs, though, for safety. So far, he has not exhibited same-sex aggression. He is selective about which dogs he likes. Most dogs that he meets, he is very submissive with and loves to play, but there have been some dogs that he just does NOT want anything to do with and will make it very clear that he does not want to be friends with them. He had very intense resource guarding as a very young puppy but grew out of it within his first year; he doesn’t have any issues with being handled while he is eating as an adult. We feed Genn high quality kibble, because he isn’t a huge fan of raw diets. Genn does not resource guard his toys at all and will actually bring them right up to me and show off to entice me to play with him.

Genn can be a bit shy and overwhelmed in very crowded spaces, but he does amazingly well in quieter meet and greets with just a couple of people. He enjoys going out with me to pet friendly local stores to make new friends and get some shopping done with me.

Genn is 28.5 inches tall and weighs about 85 pounds.

Genn is named after…

A World of Warcraft character, King Genn Greymane. Genn Greymane is the king of a human city called Gilneas, which had become afflicted by the Curse of the Worgen (werewolf). As I am an avid WoW fan, I felt that King Genn would make a perfect namesake for my young black phase high content boy from Cottonwoodz!

  • OFA CAER + Gonioscopy

Genn had his first OFA CAER + Gonioscopy eye exams on May 24, 2021, at 13 months of age. His Gonioscopy score is OFA Normal.

During his CAER eye exam, Genn was diagnosed with retinal dysplasia, in the form of retinal folds. These folds do not affect his vision in any way, and do not cause any kind of pain or discomfort. They also will not change or develop further as he ages. This disorder is usually hereditary, and is recessive, meaning both parents must pass down a copy of this gene for their offspring to be affected. At this time, there is no genetic test for wolfdogs to identify Carriers or genetically affected (homozygous) wolfdogs for retinal folds, so phsyical annual eye exams are the only way to diagnose this condition in wolfdogs at this time.

OFA does not regard this disorder as a disqualifier for breeding in wolfdogs, so Genn’s OFA CAER score was Normal, with OFA privately noting that we have a “Breeder Option,” meaning it’s entirely our decision on whether or not we want to breed Genn. Genn’s littermate sister, Cottonwoodz Zephyr, was also diagnosed with this condition a couple months prior to Genn’s exam.

Breeding wolfdogs who are affected with retinal folds to dogs who are clear for this disorder will produce carriers who are not affected and will have normal eyes.

  • OFA CAER 2022

Genn had his second OFA CAER eye exam on July 14, 2022. His eyes exhibited no change from his first exam in 2020. OFA once again issued the score of Normal, while privately noting in my account the “Breeder Option,” meaning it’s our decision on whether or not to breed Genn.
