What we expect from this litter…
We searched long and hard for the right Outcross Dog to pair with Reckless for a registered Tamaskan Dog litter. Thankfully, with the help of Wilderun Kennels, we were able to learn about Booker, owned by Laurie Warren at Team Warren in Idaho, USA. Booker, who is an Alaskan Husky from mid-distance racing lines, possesses all of the positive qualities that we admire in the Alaskan Husky, including incredibly resilient joints and genetic health, excellent working drive, and a stable, confident personality.
Booker and Reckless complement each other structurally very well, in terms of bringing their litter closer to the Tamaskan Dog breed standard. The puppies in this litter are expected to have excellent angulation in front and rear assemblies, correct tails, lupine heads, and strong paws. Some puppies may end up with a square structure like Booker vs being slightly longer than tall, but should still be well balanced overall.
Reckless tends to be a bit reserved at first towards strangers, but is VERY demanding of attention, playtime, and cuddles with her favorite people. We are hoping that Booker’s confident and more accepting personality will contribute to helping to produce a litter that is more open to meeting new people. Both parents-to-be are athletic dogs who enjoy going on adventures and having something to keep them busy. If you are looking for an active companion who is happy to get up and go, this litter could be for you. Due to being half Alaskan Husky and also having some low wolf content, these puppies are expected to need above average physical and mental enrichment daily in order to keep them happy and well adjusted. These puppies will not be the best candidates for a sedentary life, so if you live in an apartment, have a small yard, or don’t have solid plans to help your pup lead an active lifestyle, you may want to search for a Tamaskan Dog breeder with parents that are lower in drive. The nice thing about this breed is its versatility in different lines!
Both parents have proven themselves to be quick learners who are eager to work and pick up new concepts and behaviors easily. These puppies should be able to participate in a wide variety of sports and recreational activities. Potential breeding homes will have top priority, as we hope to place at least 3-5 puppies in homes where they can continue this brand-new bloodline. We will also be prioritizing homes who have plans to participate in conformation showing, dog sports, harness work, and other such activities.
Embark has analyzed the DNA for both Booker and Reckless and has predicted that the Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) for this litter will average at 1%, which is wonderful for our outcrossing program! This means that Booker and Reckless have almost completely different genetics from each other. Booker’s genetics will be a valuable new bloodline to incorporate into the Tamaskan Dog breed.
Possible Puppy Colors…
Booker’s coat color genetics are: Em/E ky/ky aw/aw S/sp
Reckless’ coat color genetics are: E/E ky/ky aw/at sp/sp
Based on the parents’ genetics, the following puppy coat color combinations are possible:
50% chance for each puppy to inherit one copy of Em and have a black mask on their muzzle, which will most likely not fade much with age
100% chance for each puppy to be agouti patterned (aw/aw or aw/at)
50% chance for each puppy to be a carrier of ‘at’ (these letters typically indicate black & tan) (aw/at)
It should be noted that Reckless, like many other wolf-mixed dogs who have tested as ‘at’ black & tan, may carry an as-yet undiscovered agouti-type gene that only shows up as ‘at’ because the laboratory doesn’t know what else to label it as. Reckless has a littermate brother who is at/at that appears identical to aw/_ dogs.
50% chance for puppies to inherit sp/sp white spotting alleles
It should be noted that Reckless is sp/sp. This normally means the dog would be piebald. However, Reckless does not display any white spotting at all. None of the puppies from this litter ended up displaying any piebald markings, either.
There are not any Black Gray puppies produced in this litter, since neither parent has the Dominant Black (‘KB’) gene or the Recessive Black gene (‘a’).
